Pulicat Lake

  • Second largest brackish – water lake or lagoon in India.
  • The large spindle-shaped barrier island named Sriharikota separates the lake from the Bay of Bengal.

DeeporBeel

  • Deepor Beel lake is located to the south-west of Guwahati city, in Kamrup Metropolitan district.
  • One of the largest beels in the Brahmaputra valley of Lower Assam.
  • The name Deepor Beel is stated to be derivative of the Sanskrit word dipa which means elephant.

Son Beel

  • Son Beel also called as Shon Bill is the second largest seasonal wetland in Asia and the largest wetland in Assam.
  • The most amazing thing about Son Beel is that it becomes a farm land for rice cultivation during winter till March and then the land fills with water and becomes a lake.
  • Son Beel is famous for its fishery and it is one of the main producers of fish for the entire district in southern Assam.

Chandubi Lake

  • Chandubi Lake is a natural lake located in Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council, Kamrup District, Assam.
  • The lake is located at the foot of Garo hills surrounded by Assam and Meghalaya.

Bihar

Kanwar Lake

  • This lake draws water from the confluence of the Gandak, the Bia and the Kareh river – is situated near Manjhaul, northwest of Begusarai.
  • It covers 2,620 hectares of the Indo-Gangetic plains in the northern Bihar State.
  • In 2020 the lake has been designated as a protected Ramsar site.

Hamirsar Lake

  • Hamirsar Lake is a man made lake situated in the centre of Bhuj.
  • Hamirsar Lake is a 450-year-old lake named after Jadeja ruler Rao Hamir (1472-1524), the founder of Bhuj.
  • The Lake is spread over an area of 28 acres and have a beautiful mid-lake garden.

Kankaria Lake

  • Kankaria Lake is the second largest lake in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India.
  • It was completed in 1451 during the reign of Sultan Qutb-ud-Din Ahmad Shah II though its origin is placed in the Chaulukya period.

Narayan Sarovar

  • A sprawling lake on the western most edge of India, Narayan Sarovar has great spiritual significance.
  • This is one of the 5 holy lakes of Hinduism, along with Mansarovar in Tibet, Pampa in Karnataka, Bhuvaneshwar in Orissa and Pushkar in Rajasthan, and is considered a coveted place for a holy dip.

Thol Lake

  • Thol Lake Sanctuary is made up of a reservoir that was created in 1912 as an irrigation tank when the Maharajas of Baroda (Gaekwads) ruled the region.
  • The lake drains a catchment area of 15,500 hectares (38,000 acres)
  • The lake, and the area around, was declared a sanctuary only in 1988, as it is home to a large number of avian species.

Vastrapur Lake

  • The Vastrapur lake was first decorated and opened for public visit in 2002 by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.
  • This lake is surrounded with thick lustrous green garden and the river side are embellished with various stones.

Haryana

Badkal Lake

  • Badkhal Lake was a natural lake situated in Badkhal village near Faridabad.
  • Its name is most probably derived from the Persian word beydakhal, which means free from interference.

Blue Bird Lake

  • Blue Bird Lake, Hisar is a resident and endangered migratory bird wetland habitat, lake and recreation area in the town of Hisar.
  • The lake is also leased out for the commercial fisheries by Fisheries Department of Government of Haryana.

Brahma Sarovar

  • Brahma Sarovar is an ancient water pool sacred to Hinduism in Thanesar, in the state of Haryana.
  • Lord Brahma created the universe from the land of Kurukshetra after a huge yajna. The Brahma Sarovar here is believed to be the cradle of civilization.
  • The sarovar is also mentioned in the eleventh century AD memoirs of Al Beruni, called ‘Kitab-ul-Hind’.

Damdama Lake

  • Damdama reservoir in Gurugram, district in the Indian state of Haryana.
  • Damdama Lake is a small lake in Haryana and was formed when a stone and earthen dam constructed by the British was commissioned for rain water harvesting in 1947.
  • The Lake greets visitors with a water level down to 20 ft (6.1 m). During monsoon the water level reaches up to 50 ft (15 m) – 70 ft (21 m).

Karna Lake

  • Karna Lake is a major tourist attraction in the Karnal district of Haryana.
  • Folklore has it that Karna, a famous character from Indian history, who played a major role in the war of Mahabharat, used to bathe in this lake.

Tilyar Lake

Himachal Pradesh

Chandra Taal

  • Tso Chikgma or Chandra Taal (meaning the Lake of the Moon), or Chandra Tal is a lake in the Lahaul part of the Lahul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh (India).
  • It is a favourite spot for tourists and high-altitude trekkers.
  • The name of the lake originates from its crescent shape.
  • It is at an altitude of about 4,300 metres (14,100 ft) in the Himalayas.

Suraj Taal

  • Suraj Tal also called Surya Tal (literally Sun God’s Lake), is a 8 km (5.0 mi) long lake that lies just below the 4,890 m (16,040 ft) high Bara-lacha-la pass in Lahaul and Spiti valley.
  • It is third highest Lake in India, and the 21st-highest in the world.

Maharana Pratap Sagar

  • Maharana Pratap Sagar in India, also known as Pong Reservoir or Pong Dam Lake.
  • The reservoir covers an area of 24,529 hectares (60,610 acres),and the wetlands portion is 15,662 hectares (38,700 acres).

Prashar Lake

  • The lake is located at a height of 2,730 m (8,960 ft) above sea level.
  • The lake can be approached from Mandi or from Bajaura in Kullu Valley.
  • It is believed that Sage Prashar meditated on the banks of this lake; hence it is named Prashar Lake.

Jammu & Kashmir

Dal Lake

  • Dal is a lake in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, India.
  • It is an urban lake, which is the second largest in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • It is integral to tourism and recreation in Kashmir and is named the “Lake of Flowers”, “Jewel in the crown of Kashmir” or “Srinagar’s Jewel”.

Wular Lake

  • Wular Lake (also spelt Wullar) is one of the largest fresh water lakes in Asia.
  • The lake basin was formed as a result of tectonic activity and is fed by the Jhelum River.
  • The lake’s size varies seasonally from 12 to 100 square miles (30 to 260 square kilometres).

Ladakh

TsoMoriri

  • Tso Moriri or Lake Moriri “Mountain Lake”, is a lake in the Changthang Plateau in Ladakh in Northern India.
  • The lake is at an altitude of 4,522 m (14,836 ft).
  • It is the largest of the high altitude lakes entirely within India and entirely within Ladakh in this Trans-Himalayan biogeographic region.

Pangong Tso

  • Pangong Tso or Pangong Lake is an endorheic lake spanning eastern Ladakh and West Tibet situated at an elevation of 4,225 m (13,862 ft).
  • It is 134 km (83 mi) long and divided into five sublakes, called Pangong Tso, Tso Nyak, Rum Tso (twin lakes) and Nyak Tso.

Karanataka

Agara Lake

  • Agara Lake is a 98-acre natural lake located in Agara, Bangalore.
  • It is one of the most well maintained lakes of Bangalore.
  • The most famous attraction of Agara Lake is the Children-Rooster Globe, which also has been cleaned.

Bellandur Lake

  • Bellandur Lake is a lake in the suburb of Bellandur in the southeast of the city of Bengaluru and is the largest lake in the city.
  • It is a part of Bellandur drainage system that drains the southern and the south-eastern parts of the city.
  • Bellandur Lake is believed to be originally a tributary of the Dakshina Pinakini river.

Karanji Lake

  • Karanji Lake is a lake located in the city of Mysore in the state of Karnataka, India.
  • This aviary is the biggest ‘walk-through aviary’ in India.
  • There is also a museum, the Regional Museum of Natural History which is located on the banks of this lake.
  • The total area of Karanji Lake is 90 hectares.

Ulsoor Lake

  • Ulsoor Lake’ or Halasuru Lake, one of the biggest lakes in Bangalore, is located on the eastern side of the city.
  • It is spread over 50 ha (123.6 acres)) and has several islands.
  • Even though the lake is dated to Kempegowdas’ time, the present lake was created by Sir Lewin Bentham Bowring, the then Commissioner of Bangalore.

Kukarahalli Lake

  • Kukkarahalli Lake also called Kukkarhalli Kere located in the heart of the Mysore city.
  • The lake drains a catchment area of more than 414 square kilometres (160 sq mi) and the water body spreads over 62 hectares (150 acres).
  • The Lake is ‘J’ shaped.The maximum depth of lake is reported to be 5 m (16 ft).

Honnamana Kere

  • Honnamana Kere (Honnama Lake) is a lake and holy place in Doddamalthe near the village of Sulimalthe.
  • It is the biggest lake in Kodagu, and once a year, during the Gowri festival, a special pooja is conducted and a ‘Bagina’ which consists of the belongings of goddess Honamma is presented to the lake.

Pampa Sarovar

  • Pampa Sarovar is a lake in Koppal district near Hampi in Karnataka.
  • It is considered sacred by Hindus and is one of the five sacred sarovars, or lakes in India.
  • In Hindu scriptures Pampa Sarovar is regarded as the place where Pampa, a form of Shiva’s consort Parvati, performed penance to show her devotion to Shiva.

Kerala

Ashtamudi Kayal

  • Ashtamudi Lake (Ashtamudi Kayal), in the Kollam District of the Indian state of Kerala, is the most visited backwater and lake in the state.
  • It possesses a unique wetland ecosystem and a large palm-shaped water body, second only in size to the Vembanad estuary ecosystem of the state.
  • The lake is also called the gateway to the backwaters of Kerala and is well known for its houseboat and backwater resorts.

Vembanad Lake

  • Vembanad (Vembanad Kayal or Vembanad Kol) is the longest lake in India.
  • It is known as Vembanadu Lake in Kottayam, Vaikom, Changanassery, Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha, Punnappra, Kuttanadu and Kochi Lake in Kochi.
  • The Vembanad wetland system covers an area of over 2033.02 km²

Shashtamkotta Lake

  • Sasthamcotta Lake or Sasthamkotta Lake, also categorized as a wetland, is the largest fresh water lake in Kerala, a state of India on the south of the West Coast.
  • The lake is named after the ancient Sastha temple (a pilgrimage centre) located on its bank.
  • It meets the drinking water needs of half million people of the Quilon district and also provides fishing resources.

Madhya Pradesh

Bhojtal

  • Bhojtal, formerly known as Upper Lake is a large lake which lies on the western side of the capital city of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal, India.
  • It is a major source of drinking water for the residents of the city, serving around 40% of the residents with nearly 30 million imperial gallons (140,000 m3) of water per day.
  • As per the local folklore, Bhojtal is said to have been built by the Paramara Raja Bhoj during his tenure as a king of Malwa (1005–1055).

Maharashtra

Salim Ali

  • Salim Ali Lake is located near Delhi Gate, Aurangabad.
  • During the Mughal period, it was known as Khiziri Talab.
  • It has been renamed after the great ornithologist, naturalist Salim Ali and also known as birdman of India.

Shivsagar Lake

  • The Shivsagar Lake is a reservoir in the state of Maharashtra, India.
  • The lake was formed after the Koyna River was impounded by the Koyna Dam.
  • It has a length of 50 km (31 mi) and depth of 80 m (262 ft).

Lonar Lake

  • Lonar Lake, also known as Lonar crater, is a notified National Geo-heritage Monument, saline, soda lake, located at Lonar in Buldhana district, Maharashtra.
  • Lonar Lake was created by a meteorite collision impact during the Pleistocene Epoch.
  • Lonar Lake has a mean diameter of 1.2 kilometres (3,900 ft) and is about 137 metres (449 ft) below the crater rim. The meteor crater rim is about 1.8 kilometres (5,900 ft) in diameter.

Manipur

Loktak Lake

  • Loktak Lake is the largest freshwater lake in North East India and is famous for the phumdis floating over it.
  • The etymology of Loktak is Lok = “stream” and tak = “the end”.
  • The largest of all the phumdis covers an area of 40 km2 (15 sq mi) and is situated on the southeastern shore of the lake.

Meghalaya

Umiam Lake

  • Umiam Lake, situated beside the Umiam River, came into existence after the construction of the Umiam Umtru Hydroelectric Dam on the Umiam River.
  • This lake is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Shillong and the whole country.
  • Its ethereal beauty reminds one of the picturesque lakes of Scotland.The lake is situated at the foothills of the hill ranges of Shillong.

Mizoram

Tam Dil

  • Ṭam Dil is a reservoir lake situated 6 km from Saitual, Mizoram.
  • In Mizo language, the word Ṭam is a contraction of anṭam, which means a mustard plant; and Dil means “lake”.

Odisha

Chilika Lake

  • Chilika Lake is a brackish water lagoon, spread over the Puri, Khurda and Ganjam districts of Odisha state.
  • It is the largest coastal lagoon in India and the largest brackish water lagoon in the world after The New Caledonian barrier reef.
  • The lake is home to a number of threatened species of plants and animals.

Kanjia Lake

  • Kanjia Lake is a natural lake on the northern outskirts of Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India.
  • While the main lake covers 75 hectares (190 acres), the total wetland covers an area of 105 hectares (260 acres) with the scuba diving facility.
  • The lake is a part of the Nandankanan Zoological Park and is used for recreational boating by visitors.

Punjab

Harike

  • Harike is one of the largest man-made wetlands of northern India which shares its area with the Tarntaran, Ferozpur and Kapurthala districts of Punjab.
  • It came into existence in 1952 after the construction of barrage near the confluence of rivers Sutlej and Beas.
  • The wetland area is spread over about 41 km2 and supports more than 400 avian species.

Ropar

  • Ropar Wetland, also named Ropar Lake, is a man-made freshwater riverine and lacustrine wetland.
  • This important ecological zone is located in the Shivalik foothills of the Lower Himalayas and was created in 1952 on the Sutlej River, in the Punjab state of India.

Kanjli

  • Kanjli Wetland, a man made Wetland, which subsumes the Kanjli Lake, located in the Kapurthala district of Punjab state in India.
  • It is reported that the Punjab State which has 14 wetlands covering an area of 225.76 km2

Rajasthan

Sambhar Lake

  • The Sambhar Salt Lake, India’s largest inland salt lake is located 80 km (50 mi) southwest of the city of Jaipur.
  • The lake receives water from five rivers: Medtha, Samaod, Mantha, Rupangarh, Khari, and Khandela.
  • It occupies an area of 190 to 230 square kilometers based on the season.

Sikkim

Tsomgo Lake

  • Tsomgo Lake, also known as Tsongmo Lake or Changgu Lake, is a glacial lake in the East Sikkim district of the Indian state of Sikkim.
  • The lake surface reflects different colours with change of seasons and is held in great reverence by the local Sikkimese people.
  • In Bhutia language the name Tsomgo is made of two words ‘Tso’ meaning “lake” and ‘Mgo’ meaning “head” which gives the literal meaning as “source of the lake”.

Khecheoplari

  • Khecheopalri Lake, originally known as Kha-Chot-Palri (meaning the heaven of Padmasambhava), is a lake located near Khecheopalri village, 147 kilometres (91 mi) west of Gangtok in the West Sikkim.
  • The lake is an integral part of the much revered valley of “Demazong” meaning valley of rice. This landscape is also known as a land of hidden treasures blessed by Guru Padmasambhava.

Tamilnadu

Ooty Lake

  • Ooty Lake is also called as ooty boat house is located in Ooty in the Nilgiris district and 1 km from ooty bus stand, Tamil Nadu, India.
  • It covers an area of 65 acres.
  • Ooty Lake is an artificial lake constructed by John Sullivan, in 1824.

Chembarambakkam

  • Chembarambakkam Lake is a lake located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, about 25 km from Chennai.
  • It is one of the two rain-fed reservoirs from where water is drawn for supply to Chennai City, the other one being the Puzhal Lake.
  • This was the first Artificial Lake built by Rajendra Chola I the son of Rajaraja Chola and Thiripuvana Madeviyar, prince of Kodumbalur.

Telangana

Hussain Sagar

  • Hussain Sagar (alternatively referred to as Tank Bund) is a heart-shaped lake in Hyderabad, Telangana, built by Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah in 1563.
  • It is spread across an area of 5.7 square kilometres (2.2 sq mi) and is fed by the River Musi.
  • A large monolithic statue of the Gautama Buddha, erected in 1992, stands on Gibraltar Rock in the middle of the lake.
  • The maximum depth of the lake is 32 feet (9.8 m).

Badrakali Lake

  • Bhadrakali Lake is a lake in Warangal, Telangana built by Ganapati Deva of Kakatiya dynasty.
  • The lake is situated near the famous Bhadrakali Temple.
  • The lake is being developed into the largest Geo-Biodiversity Cultural Park – with promenades, historic caves, suspension bridges, natural trails, nesting ground and ecological reserves.

Nagarjuna Sagar

  • Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is a masonry dam across the Krishna River at Nagarjuna Sagar which straddles the border between Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh and Nalgonda district in Telangana.
  • Constructed between 1955 and 1967, the dam created a water reservoir with gross storage capacity of 11.472 billion cubic metres (405.1×109 cu ft).
  • It is jointly operated by Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Uttar Pradesh

Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar

  • Rihand Dam also known as Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar, is the largest dam of India by volume.
  • The reservoir of Rihand Dam is called Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar and is India’s largest artificial lake.
  • Its reservoir area is on the border of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

Belasagar

  • Belasagar Lake it is situated 10 km south of Kulpahar in Belatal village of Uttar Pradesh, India.
  • This lake is a source for irrigation in the area.
  • This lake is also known as Bela Taal locally.

Uttarakhand

Bhimtal

  • Bhimtal Lake is a lake in the town of Bhimtal, in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, with a masonry dam built in 1883 creating the storage facility.
  • It is the largest lake in Kumaon region, known as the “lake district of India”.
  • The lake provides drinking water supply and supports aquaculture with variety of fish species.

West Bengal

  • The East Calcutta Wetlands, are a complex of natural and human-made wetlands lying east of the city of Calcutta (Kolkata), of West Bengal in India.
  • The wetlands cover 125 square kilometres and include salt marshes, as well as agricultural fields, sewage farms and settling ponds.
  • The name East Calcutta Wetlands was coined by Dhrubajyoti Ghosh, Special Advisory (Agricultural Ecosystems), Commission on Ecosystem Management.
