First Chief Minister of West Bengal – Prafulla Chandra Ghosh (1947-1948)
The First Chief Minister of West Bengal was Prafulla Chandra Ghosh, who held his office from 15 August 1947 – 22 January 1948.He was the Chief Minister in two West Bengal governments first in the Indian National Congress government, then in the Progressive Democratic Alliance Front government from 2 November 1967 to 20 February 1968.He was awarded doctorate in 1920 in Chemistry by Calcutta University. In January 1921, he resigned from his position at the Calcutta Mint and along with other members of the Anami Sangha joined the Freedom Struggle.He died on 18th December 1983.
Second Chief Minister of West Bengal – Bidhan Chandra Roy (1948-1962)
Bidhan Chandra Roy was Second Chief Minister of West Bengal from 23 January 1948 to 1 July 1962.Bidhan Chandra Roy MD, DSc, MRCP, FRCS was an eminent Indian physician, educationist, philanthropist, freedom fighter.He is often considered the Maker of Modern West Bengal.In India, the National Doctors’ Day is celebrated in his memory every year on 1 July.He was awarded Bharat Ratna on 4 February 1961, India’s highest civilian honour. Dr. Roy was elected to the All India Congress Committee in 1928.On 1 July 1962, his 80th birthday, after treating his morning patients and discharging affairs of the State, he took a copy of the “Brahmo Geet” and sang a piece from it. 11 hours later Dr. Roy died at midday past three.
Chief Minister of West Bengal – Prafulla Chandra Sen (1962-1967)
Prafulla Chandra Sen was Third Chief Minister of West Bengal from 9 July 1962 to 28 February 1967.Influenced by Gandhi’s speech, Sen abandoned his plans of studying abroad and rallied to Gandhi’s call for a mass non-cooperation movement against the British.Sen shifted to the remote area of Arambagh in the Hooghly district, which became his laboratory for Gandhian experiments on Swadeshi and Satyagraha.Sen wore only khadi and a week before he died, sold khadi from a newly opened shop to inaugurate its sale.He died in Calcutta on 25 September 1990.
Chief Minister of West Bengal – Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee (1967, 1969-70, 1971)
Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee was the Fourth Chief Minister of West Bengal who served three short terms as a CM. He was greatly influenced by Swami Vivekananda.Earlier a member of the Indian National Congress, he later became a leader in the Bangla Congress, which co-governed with the Communist Party of India (Marxist).He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan award in 1977 from Government of India.He died on 27th May 1986.
Chief Minister of West Bengal – Siddhartha Shankar Ray (1972-1977)
Siddhartha Shankar Ray was the Fifth Chief Minister of West Bengal from 20 March 1972 to 30 April 1977.In his political career he held a number of offices, including Union Minister of Education (1971–72), Governor of Punjab (1986–89) and Indian Ambassador to the United States (1992–96).Siddhartha Shankar Ray had a major role in the imposition of The Emergency from 1975 to 1977. He proposed to the Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to impose an “internal emergency”.Ray died of kidney failure on 6 November 2010 at the age of 90
Chief Minister of West Bengal – Jyoti Basu (1977-2000)
Jyoti Basu was the Sixth Chief Minister of West Bengal from 21 June 1977 to 5 November 2000.He was one of the co-founders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and a member of the Polit Bureau of the party since its inception in 1964 till 2008.He was noted to have been the longest serving chief minister in an elected democracy, at the time of his resignation.In the West Bengal State Assembly election of 1952, Basu was elected as the representative of the Baranagar constituency and the Communist Party emerged as the second-largest party in the assembly.In the year 1996 he was elected as Chief Minister for 5 times conscecutively in the 1996 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election.This was the last time of Basu as the Chief Minister after he resigned in the year 2000 and made a legacy of being the longest serving Chief Minister of any Indian state after Pawan Kumar Chamling beat him in the race.He died on 17th January 2010.
Chief Minister of West Bengal – Buddhadeb Bhattacharya (2000-2011)
Buddhadeb Bhattacharya was the Seventh Chief Minister of West Bengal from 6 November 2000 to 13 May 2011.He is an Indian politician and a former member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).He had his ancestral house in Bangladesh. He studied Bengali literature at the Presidency College, Kolkata, and secured his B.A. degree in Bengali (Honors), later he joined the CPI(M) as a primary member.He was the MLA of Jadavpur constituency for twenty-four years until 13 May 2011, when he was historically defeated by the former Chief Secretary of his own government, Manish Gupta.
Chief Minister of West Bengal – Mamata Banerjee (2011-Incumbent)
Mamata Banerjee was the Eighth and First Chief Minister of West Bengal from 20 May 2011 to Incumbent. Banerjee began her political career in the Congress party as a young woman in the 1970s. In 1975 she gained attention in the press media when she danced on the car of socialist activist and politician Jayaprakash Narayan as a protest against him. She founded the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC or TMC) party in 1998 after separating from the Indian National Congress, and became its chairwoman. She is often referred to as Didi.She previously served twice as Minister of Railways, the first woman to do so.She is also the first female Minister of Coal, and Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Youth Affairs, Sports, Women and Child Development in the cabinet of the Indian government.She is a self-taught painter and a poet. Her 300 paintings were sold for ₹9crore.In 2012, Time magazine named her as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World. Baghini, a Bengali film, based on her life, was released on 24 May 2019.She is current Chief Minister of Mamata Banerjee.
